My Keto Journey

Keto, ketogenic, LCHF (low carb, high fat). These were terms that never enter my diet lexicon until this summer. I was raised that carbs are good and fat is bad.

Halloween is a terrible time to commit to a diet that basically calls sugar the Devil. But I didn't eat a single piece. Awesome! This is easy! But end of day 2, was a different story. I had the "keto flu" *cue dun-dun-dun music*

I felt terrible. Other practitioners suggested water and salt. That helped. Felt better. See, I had this! Until the next day that was even worse. And the day after, even more so. Everytime I saw a sandwich I started shaking. All that candy lying around after Halloween was like a siren's song. There was no way I was going to be able to stick to the very stringent 70% fat-25% protein-5% carbs diet.

So I found a plug-in to work with My Fitness Pal to give me my net carbs and my percentages. Eat more fat! I ate coconut oil by the spoonful, drank 15 cups of water a day and finally I added Nuun tabs. Those suckers saved my life.

Day 5, the detox was over for me. The cravings were gone. I still have to work to add the fat. Huge mental hurdle there. My biggest mental hurdle is fast food. I can't eat out yet. I still lack the knowledge and I'm not ready to test my willpower against a bread basket or french fries.
